200 Weeks of "SWAG"
I'm reaching one milestone, two hundred weekly posts.
And I'm closing in on another, four years of posting.
It was a commitment I made to myself in the "SWAG."
I had been reading the blog of James Clear,
the eventual author of Atomic Habits,
for about six months when I had this idea.
The idea had around long before,
but I read a post that inspired me to act.
To act on the idea of becoming a writer.
James said he wrote and published on a schedule.
Regardless of how good or bad the writing was,
when the day to post arrived, he would just post.
I had never had that kind of courage to act,
but this felt like I had been granted permission.
Who cares if it's good or bad? Just post.
So I did.
And I have.
Two hundred times now.
So what's with the "swag"?
It's an accidental acronym I've adopted
to name and define my writing space.
It's not a "simple...guess" or "stuff we all get."
It's a place set apart where I do my daily work.
The space where I commit to daily writing and weekly posting.
It's a Sanctuary.
A sacred space of prayer and silence.
Of reflection and connection.
It's a Workshop.
A space where I do the work. I show up on a schedule and commit to the practice.
It's an Academy.
A space where I read and learn.
Getting into the minds of writers I admire and respect.
It's a Garden.
A space where I allow my skills to grow.
Where I nurture the practice and wait patiently.
I love this proverb...
The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago.
The second best time is now.
In order for us to be what we want to be,
we need to do what we need to do starting now.
And now is today, and day after day.
So how about you? What do you want to do? I suggest you plant a tree today.
Then find and commit to your own daily SWAG.
