Don't Scare the Fish
Mindfulness and Fishing with Kids
I must have only been around five or six years old when I first remember hearing, “we have to be quiet so we don’t scare the fish.” Dad and I were sitting on the bank of Sage’s pond as we often did. I imagine my words were a non-stop flow of unfiltered thoughts. Like most kids that age, I’m sure I was talking about anything and everything. And I'm sure many of you who know me think that not a lot has changed. But this phrase, “don’t scare the fish” caught my attention. Fish can hear us? They won’t bite if we’re talking? I better not take any chances. It’s funny to think about now. Really, Dad was just saying that we should enjoy the quiet. We should enjoy this time together. We should enjoy the nature that surrounded us.
Fishing has always been Dad’s refuge. A well deserved break to clear the mind and just relax. And fishing with Dad helped us kids learn to slow down, enjoy the quiet, and enjoy the moment. Fishing is a great mindfulness practice. A great practice in patience and stillness. A great practice in simply being present and being aware. What a great lesson for kids. And adults. Take a moment to stop and pay attention. Take a moment to listen and watch. Take a moment to clear the mind and focus on what’s happening right now. We can’t do that unless we’re quiet. There is great wisdom in this simple lesson. Take a moment to be quiet so you don’t scare the fish.
Have an awesome day!
