One Small Voice

My reaction surprised me.

I had forgotten about those first few lines.

I was thinking about the chorus.

If this one small voice is heard by only one,

This one small voice can tell about God’s son.

This one small life will be useful indeed.

If this one small heart can start to understand

Every effort I give is precious in his plan

This one small life will bring glory to God.

That was the part of the song I remembered.

Greg and Rebecca Sparks were a duo that once traveled with Rich Mullins.

Their CD was a regular in my music rotation.

This song, One Small Voice, was one of my favorites.

Yesterday, the tune and lyrics returned for a visit.

Throughout the morning, that chorus was stuck on repeat in my mind.

So I pulled up the song to hear the familiar tune again.

But my reaction to the song was not what I expected.

Inside this heart is a fragile soul

And inside this soul, there is a fear you won’t love me

If you could see me like I do.

So I try real hard to be a big success

And then I see you are not impressed, I don’t know why

You probably see me like I do.

That’s what I didn't remember.

That first stanza, that verse.

It resonated with me.

My reaction? I had to stop the song.

I was stunned and choked up.

I had to let that sink in for a few minutes.

Because I do have a fragile soul, as we all do.

But I'm also reminded of scripture's wisdom to fear not.

So as we wonder if we are doing enough or being enough,

we can take a moment, take a breath, and take a break from wondering.

We are, just as we are.

You are, just as you are.

I am, just as I am.

And now here I am, one small voice.

And there you are, one small voice.

And my one is enough and your one is enough.

Because my one voice and your one voice both bring glory.

In our own lives and in our service to others.

I am grateful for this reminder.

That if this one small voice is heard by only one,

it is more than enough for this fragile soul.

And for your fragile soul.

Because you are enough, just as you are.

Thank you, Greg and Rebecca, for that message.

And for your small voice that is not so small after all.
